Cheapness of skype

I didn't realized this until I was working overseas for a few weeks recently.

But skype was truely amazing.

I was making some overseas call using autoroaming. They were short calls. About 4 calls of 2 mins each. And then there were quite abit of SMS.

But when the bill came, I was shocked. Around $80 of overseas charges!

So my next trip, I resolved to trying out skype. I bought 10 usd worth of skype credits. And I didn't even managed to use them up! I even used skype to call her home landline! For a good 2 hours, it cost around 3 usd!

I'm definitely impressed.

And then, two more trips later, I was slapped with another scary bill. This time, it was around $160 of overseas charges! But that's from around 140 SMS, each costing around $0.60. Both incoming and outgoing SMS.

Seriously. So now I'm using skype to send my SMS too. It cost around 0.09 per SMS I believe.

I heard that Vietnam and Cambodia are worse. A single 5 mins call could cost over $100!

I'm now into my second 10 usd block of skype credits, and I'm already been here for around 5 weeks.

Skype is good and cheap. It would be even better if I could make calls pr send SMS directly over the cell network rather than connected to a wifi. I'm almost tempted to get a mifi with a data plan and dropping my current cellphone plan just so I can do skype with ease!

I can make a bold statement here: The world only needs data plan in the future.
