iphone, apps, and finance tools

My ipod shuffle just died. Or so I thought it died. Except it did not. I was not sure why, but it was set to random shuffle, and whenever I tried to play, it just did not.

So, thinking that it died, I went to check out on the ipod series available from apple. The ipod touch was really rather tempting. Except it cost almost as much as an iphone. So why not an iphone?

iphone integrates well with my Mac, and as much as I hate Apple for their evil AppStore policy, a good integration will make management my life really easy.

So I decided to succumb to the evil, but before that, some preparation was needed.

1. I gotta populate my Mac Address Book, so that my contacts can be sync to the phone easily.

2. Start using iCal, marking important dates, so that it can be sync over.

3. Bookmark the Evernote app, so that I can start using it. Probably can use it to do blog drafts.

4. I loved Things, but stopped using it when it turn commercial. It has iPhone support, so I should buy the Mac version soon and start using it.

5. Check on PDF support. Look! AIR Sharing is cool!

6. Now... a finance tool.. this is the killer.

I had tried out web tools before. Mint, money-strands are US only. And then most of these (including Wasabe?) require a bank account linked. Expensr was the only one that I could vaguely like, but it is still a very web based tool. I really wanted a desktop tool.

So I looked at iBank and Cha-Ching. iBank was just too... complex and intimating. Cha-Ching was neat, but it lack reporting.

It is not that I want a complex tool (or do I?). All I need, for a start is accounts tracking, and expense. Next generate reports from them (to see what most of my money went). With the reports, I can make accurate and proper budgeting, and finally begin savings plan. Snowmint's Budget was rather good for that for a while, but it just did not feel right enough. Maybe I am not used to envelope oriented style for a start.

I think I'll just stick to my Excel for now, using Evernotes to record my expense on my iPhone when I get it.
